Minjee Lee a major champion, wins Evian Championship

Australia’s Minjee Lee has won the Evian Championship after beating Korea’s Jeongeun Lee6 in a sudden-death playoff.

Lee began the day seven shots behind overnight leader Jeongeun Lee6 but an incredible final round 7-under par saw the Australian take the lead at the 16th hole.

Lee6 made a startling five bogeys in her opening nine holes to fall down the leaderboard but recovered to birdie her final three holes to storm into the playoff.

An incredible approach to the water-laden final green saw Minjee Lee setup an 8-foot putt for eagle at the first sudden-death hole.

However, Lee didn’t need to make the eagle after Lee6 dunked her second shot into the water.

The win was Minjee Lee’s first major victory and continues Australia’s recent dominance on the world golf stage.

“I’m speechless. I been waiting for this for so long. It just feels unreal to have won,” Lee said.

“Just even in the playoff, and all throughout today, I played really well to get myself in that position, and I just really happy.”

Many Australian golfers, including Minjee Lee’s brother Min Woo Lee, have won on the world’s biggest golf tours in the past month.
