Min Woo Lee Earns Debut in 2024 Presidents Cup as Captain’s Picks Are Finalised

Australian golfer Min Woo Lee has been selected to debut in the 2024 Presidents Cup, as announced by International Team captain Mike Weir. Lee, ranked world No. 42, was chosen as one of the six captain’s picks for the International team, joining fellow Australians Adam Scott and Jason Day at the Royal Montreal Golf Club later this month.

Weir praised Lee as “one of the best drivers of the golf ball” and highlighted his flair and strong performance throughout the season. Lee’s inclusion comes after a standout year that also saw him represent Australia at the Paris Olympics. Notably, Lee’s selection means that Cameron Davis, who was ranked higher than some of the other picks, missed out, a decision Weir described as a “tough choice.”

“Cam was very deserving, as well, and you wish you could pick 13 or 14, but there’s only 12, and it was a really tough choice,” Weir said. “I believe in Cam Davis, too, but also believe in Si Woo, and that’s why we went with him there. Those are the tough calls as captain that you have to make.”

The International team, led by first-time captain Weir, completed its roster with other captain’s picks, including South Africa’s Christiaan Bezuidenhout, South Korea’s Si Woo Kim, and a trio of Canadians: Corey Conners, Taylor Pendrith, and Mackenzie Hughes.

Despite surprisingly overlooking another Canadian, Nick Taylor, this marks the first time three Canadian players have been selected for the Presidents Cup.

On the US side, captain Jim Furyk followed the rankings closely for his six captain’s picks, selecting players ranked seventh to twelfth in the points standings. The US wildcard selections include Keegan Bradley, who will also serve as a captain’s assistant, Sam Burns, Tony Finau, Russell Henley, Brian Harman, and Max Homa.

Furyk’s decisions reflect a shift away from controversial selections in previous team events, choosing to prioritize recent form and ranking rather than past reputations. Notably absent from the team is Justin Thomas, who has been a mainstay in US international teams since 2016.

The 2024 Presidents Cup will feature a formidable US team that includes world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and several other top-ranked players. The International team will be seeking to secure its first victory since 1998, with Weir’s squad looking to break a longstanding US dominance that includes 12 wins out of 14 editions of the event. The tournament is set to take place from September 26 to 29 at Royal Montreal.
