USA Wins 2024 Solheim Cup, Ending Europe’s Winning Streak
The United States defeated Europe 15-13 at the 2024 Solheim Cup, reclaiming the trophy for the first time since 2017 in a tightly contested final day at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia.
The U.S. Team, led by captain Stacy Lewis, ended Europe’s three-tournament winning streak after a dramatic final day claiming the Solheim Cup 15.5-12.5.
Lilia Vu secured the clinching half-point against Albane Valenzuela, marking a remarkable comeback for the 26-year-old, who had withdrawn from a major championship earlier this year due to a back injury.
The win marked a turning point for the Americans, who were motivated by a sense of unfinished business following last year’s 14-14 tie in Spain.
The tournament began with the Americans dominating the opening day, taking an early 6-2 lead with strong performances in the foursomes and four-ball matches. Europe mounted a challenge on Saturday, with the teams splitting the sessions evenly, but the U.S. maintained a 10-6 lead heading into the final singles matches.
On Sunday, Europe fought back, with Charley Hull defeating Nelly Korda and Georgia Hall securing a win over Alison Lee. However, key victories from Rose Zhang and Allisen Corpuz kept the U.S. ahead.
With Europe gaining momentum late in the day, Vu’s decisive birdie on the 18th hole secured the half-point that sealed the win for the U.S. Reflecting on her performance, Vu expressed gratitude for her team’s support, highlighting the challenges she faced leading up to the event.
Captain Lewis praised the unity and determination of her team, emphasizing the significance of the victory on home soil. The next Solheim Cup will take place in 2026 in Spain, where Europe will aim to reclaim the trophy.
