Rory McIlroy’s win at Hoylake not only won himself the winner’s cheque at The Open overnight but his Dad had a nice pay-day as well.
Gerry McIlroy and a few of his friends have won £200,000 after a successfully betting on his son, Rory McIlroy to win The Open by the age of 26.
The best was placed 10 years ago, when McIlroy was just 16-years-old and it is understood that McIlroy snr and his friends placed £400 at 500/1 with a bookie on Rory to win The Open Championship before his 26th birthday.
Rory could’ve given them the £200,000 himself though after not only claiming the £975,000 cheque for his victory at Royal Liverpool. He has already amassed over US$29million in career prize money since turning professional in 2007.
