PRESIDENTS CUP / Captain’s unveil their picks
Phil Mickelson is the biggest name to be handed a captain’s pick at the 2017 Presidents Cup in New Jersey.
US team captain Steve Stricker named Phil Mickelson and Charley Hoffman as his two captain’s picks for the upcoming Presidents Cup (Sept 28 – Oct 1). International team captain Nick Price has named Argentina’s Emilio Grillo and India’s Anirban Lahiri to make up his 12-man Presidents Cup team.
Charley Hoffman was just missed out on a qualification and was 11th on the US team rankings, while Mickelson’s place in the Presidents Cup team is no surprise given his experience in the teams event. Mickelson has played in all 11 Presidents Cup’s since it began in 1994.
Similarly, Price picked his 11th ranked player in Emilio Grillo but his selection of Lahiri was based more on his regular appearances on the PGA Tour and a desire to make amends for a heart-breaking finish at the 2015 Presidents Cup in South Korea.
“We looked at the guys, really, who are full-time on the US Tout because there’s a certain comfort having played here,” Price said.
