Open champion Cameron Smith won’t comment on LIV Golf League rumour

It was a tense media conference for Cameron Smith ahead of the FedEx St.Jude championship. Smith neither confirmed nor denied he will be joining the Saudi-backed LIV Golf League.

The relatively lucrative FedEx Cup Playoffs begin this week and new Open champion Cameron Smith fronted the media.

Will rumours swirling of Smith’s impending move to the LIV Golf League, it all got a little tense.

Smith still seems intent on playing the Presidents Cup in September.

That’s something that we’ve been looking forward to for the last three years,” Smith said Tuesday. “We missed a year because of COVID and that’s something that I look forward to being a part of.”

It remains to be seen whether he is allowed to play after joining the Saudi-backed LIV Golf League, or if he even joins at all.

Cameron Percy seemed to think both Cameron Smith and Marc Leishman will be joining LIV when asked for his opinion on Melbourne Radio yesterday.

Cameron Smith didn’t take the comments too kindly.

“You know, my goal here is to win the FedEx Cup playoffs. That’s all I’m here for,” Smith said.

“If there’s something I need to say regarding the PGA Tour or LIV, it’ll come from Cameron Smith, not Cameron Percy.”

“I’m a man of my word and whenever you guys need to know anything, it’ll be said by me.”
