Nine Aussies set for 2012 FedEx Cup playoffs – schedule and format
The FedEx Cup playoffs kick off this week with nine Aussies in the field.
Nine Australians have done enough throughout the regular PGA Tour season to earn a spot in the 2012 FedEx Cup playoffs beginning this week and one of the toughest tests in US golf, Bethpage Black.
Tiger Woods sits atop of the FedEx Cup standings going into the playoffs closely followed by Jason Dufner and Rory McIlroy. These guys obviously have the best chance of making it to the final event featuring a field of 30 but with loads points on offer during the coming weeks, there is still plenty of hope players currently ranked outside the Top-30 can make the Tour Championship.
Of the nine Aussies in the field, Marc Leishman is our best hope to be seen in the final week of the playoffs. He currently sits in 28th spot, thanks largely to his win at the Travelers Championship in June. His form has been patchy since but will be preparing for a big finish.
Adam Scott currently sits in 32nd spot and you’d expect a good month from Scott who has posted great finishes in the big tournaments this year.
Rod Pampling sat on the bubble in 125th spot before last week’s final regular tour event and played some good golf for a top-30 finish and will head to The Barclays with confidence. His only issue at Bethpage may be the distance required on this formidable golf course where he, Jason Day and Robert Allenby need to play well to rise into the top-100 to play next week’s event.

Schedule and format
Four events make up the FedEx Cup playoffs that sees the field trimmed each week before culminating in a 25 man field at The Tour Championship. Points gained through the regular season events carry over until the final tournament where points are reset and in theory, anybody then has some chance of winning the trophy. Oh and $10 million.
