Justin Thomas leads US Open: First round video highlights
Justin Thomas has jumped to the top of the leaderboard through the opening round of the 2020 US Open at Winged Foot.
Despite the build-up suggesting bogeys will be plentiful at the 2020 US Open, Justin Thomas carded just the one.
With a putter running hot, Thomas tamed Winged Foot to post six birdies to sit one stroke clear of the field at 5-under par.
“It’s one of the best rounds I’ve played in a while tee to green,” Thomas said. “There are a couple things here and there that definitely could have been better, but I made sure all of my misses were in the right spot, and that’s what you have to do at a U.S. Open.”
The softer greens and calm conditions meant Winged Foot was as vulnerable as it will be all week. In total 21 players finished under par.
“The greens are very soft. I thought they’d be a little firmer, but I also understood that they need to err on this side so they can get them how they want this weekend. We had soft conditions this morning, a little overcast,” Thomas added. “Wind wasn’t really blowing very much. So it was good scoring conditions.”
Best of the nine Aussies in the field was Adam Scott who fired an even-par round 70 despite a few shaky iron shots.
“I was a little scratchy into the greens when I missed a couple fairways, and you can’t be too critical about your shots into the greens from there,” Scott said after his round. “When I was in the fairway, just wasn’t quite dialed in and missed a couple of greens, like in the 7th, made a good bogey.
“I putted well today, though. If I can straighten it out with the irons, everything else feels good.”
Other notable scores:
-3 Rory McIlroy
-1 Jon Rahm
+2 Jason Day
+3 Tiger Woods, Dustin Johnson, Marc Leishman
