Jason Day goes wire-to-wire to win PLAYERS Championship
World number one Jason Day emphatically won the 2016 PLAYERS Championship by four strokes.
Jason Day has stamped his authority on the golf world by become the fourth Australian winner of the PLAYERS Championship. Day joins Adam Scott, Greg Norman and Steve Elkington as previous winners of prestigious PLAYERS Championship and is clearly the dominant golfer in the world right now.
Day led the field after every round and has now won the last five ties he has led after 54 holes has claimed victory in seven of his last 17 starts: 1, T5, T23, T10, 1, 1, T23, T11, MC, T10, T10, 1, T12, 1, 1, T12, 1.
Day saw his lead drop to two shots at the turn of the final round and on a course as treacherous and tricked-up as TPC Sawgrass it wasn’t going to be an easy stretch home.
But the world number one bounced back with brilliant birdies at the 10th and 12th holes to resume his four stroke buffer. A birdie at the par-5 16th after almost chipping in for eagle all but sealed the deal.
“It is such a big accomplishment for me in my career to be able to finally win as World No. 1 and then to go wire-to-wire is very special,” Day said after his victory.
“But then I am just glad I don’t have to play the course again.”
All in the family.
