Golfer snaps driver on gallery rope on the way playoff hole
A golfer was forced to use a three-wood after snapping her driver on the way to the first playoff hole.
The KPMG Women’s Irish Open came to a dramatic conclusion on Sunday when three players tied for the lead forcing a sudden death playoff.
Unfortunately for Anne Van Dam things got more dramatic as she was driven to the first playoff hole in a golf cart.
The cart driven by a Ladies European Tour official went under a gallery rope that lined the fairway of the 18th hole. Van Dam held the rope up as they passed underneath, however, the rope then got caught on the Dutchwoman’s golf bag, snapping the driver.
Although rules permitted her to replace the club, she was unable to retrieve one before the playoff began and was forced to use a 3-wood off the tee. Van Dam still outdrove her playoff opponents; Sweden’s Lisa Pettersson and Denmark’s Smilla Tarning Soenderby.
It was Soenderby who eventually took out the title.
Trailing by nine shots after the conclusion of the -third round, Soenderby carded an incredible 10-under par to force her way into the playoff.
Thanks to a spectacular approach shot followed by a winning eagle putt, Soenderby claimed her first LET title.
