Day withdraws from another golf tournament with thumb injury
Jason Day’s build up to the 2014 Masters isn’t exactly going as planned.
Day sustained a thumb injury during his win at the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship in late February and it is yet to fully heal.
The ligament injury forced Day to withdraw from the WGC tournament at Doral a few weeks ago. FoxSports reported that Day arrived at this week’s PGA Tour event at Bay Hill fully expecting to play but after the injury flared up, he immediately withdrew.
“I didn’t hit any full shots for the last 12 days and I was just practising my short game from 50 yards and in for about three and a half hours a day and it was fine and felt great,” Day told AAP.
“I thought that was a good thing, especially hitting out of bunkers as you hit it pretty hard. So I went down to Orlando, feeling like I could play but I strapped my thumb this morning, hit a few balls and the pain came back again so I just have to rest up.”
Day missed the 2012 Masters with an ankle injury sustained in the gym and given Day’s recent results at Augusta, it would be a major story if he didn’t make the 2014 Masters which begins in three weeks on Thursday April 10.
