Adam Scott Bows Out of Australian Golf Season to Prioritize Family and Rest
Adam Scott has announced he will miss the 2024 Australian PGA Championship and Australian Open, prioritizing family time and rest after a demanding season.
Adam Scott’s choice to skip the Australian PGA Championship and Australian Open this year reflects a genuine desire for rest and time with family after an intense season.
In contrast, this decision appears more personal than in 2017, when Scott voiced frustration at being overlooked by Golf Australia for appearance incentives. Back then, Scott took issue with Golf Australia’s offers of higher fees to attract players like Jordan Spieth and Jason Day to the Australian Open, expressing disappointment over the lack of acknowledgment for his consistent commitment to local events.
The 44-year-old has been a consistent drawcard in Australia’s summer golf season, but after a year highlighted by his re-entry into the world’s top 20 and 11 consecutive Presidents Cup team appearances, Scott’s focus this year is on family and recovery.
“Throughout my career, I’ve always done my best to come back to Australia to compete in at least some of our great local events,” Scott stated, noting that 2024 would be an exception.
With Scott sitting out, LIV Golf’s Cameron Smith now becomes the headliner for the events at Royal Queensland and Kingston Heath. Jason Day is also set to return to the Australian PGA for the first time since 2017, with Smith expressing understanding of Scott’s choice.
“I think his great play towards the end of the year probably led to a few more events than he wanted to play, and to have some time off is always a good thing,” Smith said.
Both PGA of Australia and Golf Australia extended their support for Scott’s decision, adding that they look forward to his return next season.
