Jason Day ties course record to lead PLAYERS Championship: video

World number one Jason Day ties course record at TPC Sawgrass.

Jason Day has come roaring out of the blocks at the 2016 PLAYERS Championship carding a flawless 9-under par 63. Day will take a take a two-stroke lead after his superb round tied for the course record at TPC Sawgrass.

Jason Day’s last round on this golf course was a 9-over par 81 on his way to missing the cur in 2015. This time he completed the course needing 18 less shots and had a look at a birdie putt on all 18 holes.

“The greens were very receptive out there,” said Day. “The temperature was hot, so the ball was going a long way, and when the ball goes a long way, you’re coming in with shorter clubs if you hit the fairways. And we thought the greens were sticking and a lot of guys could attack the pins that we had out there.”

Despite Day’s remarkable round, it’s amazing to see he only leads by two strokes. The scoring average is the lowest it has been around TPC Sawgrass in 23 years with a host of players on 7-under par including England’s Justin Rose.

Also great to see is Ernie Els just three strokes behind Day who loos to have put his Masters debacle behind him after carding a 6-under 66.

Aaron Baddeley is the next best Australian finishing at 3-under par despite dropping three shots in his closing three holes.

Adam Scott was another who dropped shots at the finish. In Scott’s case it was a quadruple-bogey 8 after finding the water twice at the par-4 finishing hole to see him drop from 3-under to 1-over
