Hole-in-one sends Mathias Sanchez on to win Men’s Australian Amateur Championship: video
Match play golf is always going to produce some thrilling shots and this year’s Australian Amateur Championships included an incredible hole-in-one.
In an event that seems to be growing in stature every year, 18-year-old Mathias Sanchez produced a stunning hole-in-one in the semi-final on Saturday on his way to winning the prestigious Men’s Australian Amateur Championship at Yarra Yarra Golf Club.
Sanchez, a member at Royal Melbourne managed to win the last three holes of the 36-hole final to win 1-up in an epic final against Min Woo Lee. But it was his incredible ace during the semi-final on the previous day (captured on camera) that still had everyone talking.
As Mark Hayes from Golf Australia reported:
But after Wools-Cobb hit the green with his tee shot on the iconic 15th, the young Victorian played arguably the shot of his life – a perfect five-iron for a hole-in-one to effectively seal a semi-final berth.
“It was unbelievable,” Sanchez, 18, said. “The hole before I struggled to get a half, so I knew I had to do something on the 15th.
“So I pulled out a 5-iron and hit it so good … it was tracking the flag, it took one bounce and went in pretty quickly. I got a few cheers and knew it was in. Mum went a bit nuts … so I knew it was in the hole.
Hye-jin Choi won the Women’s Australian Amateur Championship with a 4&2 victory over fellow Korean golf So-mi Lee. After earning her number one seeding in the stroke play section earlier in the week, Choi managed to hold off a Lee for a comfortable victory and etch her name into the trophy.
