Video: Day withdraws from WGC Match Play to be with mum battling lung cancer

Jason Day will take an indefinite leave from golf to be with his mother who is battling cancer.

Jason Day gave an emotional press conference after withdrawing from the WGC Match Play in Austin, Texas. After walking off the course after just six holes, Day revealed that his mother is battling lung cancer and has been given just 12 months to live.

Day informed the press his withdrawal was not because of injury, and then spent a tearful four minutes explaining the situation to the media.

“It’s been very, very emotional as you can tell. I’ve already gone through it once with my Dad and I know how it feels and it’s hard enough to see another one go through it as well,” said Day. “It’s been a very, very hard time for me to be even thinking about playing golf and emotionally it’s been wearing on me for a while.”

Day has informed the PGA Tour he will take indefinite leave from golf to be with his mother, and said he wanted to make sure that the media was aware of the situation and weren’t left speculating about his absence from the golf course. His mother will undergo surgery on Friday to remove a 3-4cm mass from her lungs.
