Australia’s most anticipated new golf course is nearing completion

Australia’s next world-class golf destination is taking shape in Hobart, Tasmania, with 7 Mile Beach set to open soon and a second course already approved.

Tasmania’s 7 Mile Beach Golf Course is nearing completion, promising to be a world-class addition to Australia’s golf scene. Designed by the renowned team of Mike DeVries, Mike Clayton, and Frank Pont, this new layout is the vision of PGA Tour professional Mathew Goggin, who grew up nearby and saw the potential for golf on the area’s spectacular sand dunes.

A decade in the making, the course blends traditional links-style golf with stunning coastal views of Hobart’s Tiger Head Bay. Excitement has only grown with photos shared on the course’s Instagram, showing fairways lush and nearly ready for play. By all reports, most of the course will be open later this year or early next year.

One standout feature of the design is a unique hole with two greens. Course designers couldn’t decide which location was better suited for the layout, so they built both. These greens will be used alternately, adding another layer of intrigue for future players.

Adding to the buzz, Clarence City Council recently approved the development of a second course on the site. Likely to be called 5 Mile Beach, this new course will sit north of the original layout on a wider, 921.8-hectare site.

The second course will share facilities with 7 Mile Beach, including a clubhouse and restaurant. Mat Goggin quoted Bandon Dunes founder Mike Keiser, noting that “one course is a curiosity, two courses are a destination.” Goggin believes that, just like Bandon Dunes, the addition of a second course will turn 7 Mile Beach into a must-visit golf destination, attracting more visitors and driving local economic growth.

Beyond the golf itself, Goggin envisions the entire peninsula as a recreational hub. The project aims to improve public access, adding trails, tracks, and facilities for the local community. Eleven holes of the 7 Mile Beach course are expected to open for preview play very soon, with a full opening planned for early-mid next year.

Work on the 5 Mile Beach course is set to begin around the same time, and will likely be Australia’s next most anticipated golf course.
