The 2018 US Open begins on Thursday (Friday morning Australian time) and it’s must-watch for any golf fan who is a student of golf architecture with host course Shinnecock Hills one of the great, classic American golf courses.

US Open golf courses are traditionally set-up in such a way to provide a brutal test of golf for the world’s best golfers. Often at the expense of strategy and interesting golf. Time will tell how the USGA decide to set up Shinnecock Hills this week, either way this should be a major to remember.

Keep a close eye on the par-3 7th hole this week. In 2004, when Shinnecock Hills last hosted the US Open, things got out of hand.

Several players struggled to get the ball in the hole from just a few feet away – often finishing 10-20 feet past the hole. One short putt finished in the green-side bunker.
