Tiger Woods will play Phil Mickelson in multimillion-dollar head-to-head match

Tiger Woods has confirmed he and Phil Mickelson will play a big-money, pay-per-view match in Las Vegas on Thanksgiving weekend.

Let’s just start by saying this would be waaaaaaay more interesting if they were playing for their own money. It’s not like they don’t have the millions to stump up for it. But anyway…

Tiger Woods confirmed on Twitter today that the rumours were true, he and Phil Mickelson will be going head-to-head in a Thanksgiving Weekend match in Las Vegas.

Details for what is being billed as “The Match” are sketchy at this stage. It sounds like it will be a pay-per-view event (at least in the US) with HBO also involved in the build up.

Some reports are also suggesting it will be a winner take all match – with the “all” being $10 million.

Mickelson just joined Twitter yesterday and has immediately started a bit of back-and-forth banter with Woods after the announcement, including one reference to $9 million (see below).

These sorts of head-to-head golf matches aren’t new. Tiger Woods played Rory McIlroy in China many years ago now and from the early 1960s until 2003, Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf regularly pitted two of the world’s best players against each other. Albeit for no where bear this amount of cash.
