Tiger Woods is playing to win The Open at Royal Troon: full press conference video
Tiger Woods is not one to play major championships unless he thinks he can win.
So not surprisingly, he told the media ahead of the the 152nd Open championship that he thinks he can win this week at Royal Troon.
“I’ll play as long as I can play and I feel like I can still win the event,” Woods said.
Interestingly, the last time The Open was held at Royal Troon, Woods didn’t tee it up when Henrik Stenson outlasted Phil Mickelson in 2016.
Woods also had a prickly reply to a suggestion from Colin Montgomerie that this Open Championship would be a good time for the 15-time major champions to bid farwell.
““Well, as a past champion, I’m exempt until I’m 60. Colin’s not,” Woods said.
“He’s not a past champion, so he’s not exempt. So he doesn’t get the opportunity to make that decision. I do.”
Woods also told the media about the difficult decision to turn down the Ryder Cup captaincy, ultimately awarded to Keegan Bradley.
“The decision was very difficult for me to make,” Woods told the media.
“My time has been so loaded with the tour and everything and what we’re trying to accomplish. I’m on so many different subcommittees that it just takes so much time in the day, and I’m always on calls.”
But Woods hasn’t ruled out taking on the role in future editions of the Ryder Cup.
“I’ll put my hat in the ring again when I have more time and I feel like I can devote myself to a Ryder Cup. As of right now, I’ve got so many different things I’m juggling and trying to get right at the same time for all the players that are a part of the PGA Tour.”
