THE OPEN / Americans dominate as Spieth and Woods thrill Carnoustie

Jordan Spieth, Tiger Woods and Justin Rose thrill golf fans at Carnoustie during round three of the 147th Open Championship.

American flags dominate the top of the leaderboard after three rounds of The Open. American trio of Kevin Kisner, Jordan Spieth and Xander Schauffele finished the day at 9-under par for the tournament with fellow American Kevin Chappell a further shot back at 8-under par.

Compared to the relative dawdle that was round two, the third round of The Open was a thrill a minute with Englishmen Chris Wood and Justin Rose firing early birdies to get into the clubhouse with scores that will see them in with a chance on Sunday.

After finishing just inside the cutline, Rose shot the best round of the day; a blemish-free 7-under 64 to finish 4-under par, five shots behind the leaders by the end of the day.

But the fireworks were yet to truly get going.

Tiger Woods playing in his first Open since 2015 had golf fans wondering what year it was as the 14-timer major winner rolled back the years to shoot a 5-under 66 which included six birdies. Woods will go into the final round four behind the leaders, enough to get golf fans salivating for the final round and create a few nerves for the leaders.

After a scratchy finish to his opening round, Jordan Spieth looks in complete control of his swing and looks to be ht favourite to go back-to-back this week.

Spieth hit Carnoustie with a bang on Saturday making eagle at the first hole and eventually signed off for a bogey-free 66 which will see him in play in the final group with 24-year old Xander Schauffele who has made just five bogeys over the opening three days.

Adam Scott is the best of the Australians at 4-under par.

Scott who is playing with two putters in the bag this week made two birdies in the closing five holes to give himself a shot of that elusive Claret Jug.
