Shane Warne remembered at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship: “He drifted an orange”

Several celebrities, golfers and the eventual winner have paid tribute to the late Shane Warne at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

Shane Warne played in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship on 14 occasions and seven months after his death, several tributes have been shared during this year’s tournament.

Piers Morgan and three former English crocket captains raised a glass for Warne on the 18th green of The Old Course at St.Andrews, and Michael Vaughan has shared a great story about Warne bowling him out with an orange.

“You mentioned us as bunny rabbits, Piers, and I was that person that was bowled out by that orange,” Vaughan recalled.

“It was after I’m guessing 20 Red Bull and vodkas, at least. And he produced that ball that he produced so many times in his career, with an orange at 2:30am.”

“Alright, I was batting with a tequila bottle. He drifted an orange.”

And there was a touching tribute on the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship website.

Shane was also a talented and enthusiastic golfer who played 14 times in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, where he was a popular partner and much loved by the enthusiastic Scottish galleries. He was a great entertainer, as well as a highly competitive player.

One of his greatest ambitions was to win the Alfred Dunhill Links Team Championship, but he never quite managed it, although he did finish second with professional partner Ryan Fox last year.

The eventual winner and good mate, Ryan Fox also mentioned Warne in his victory speech after claiming the trophy by one stroke.

“To be honest the only person I can really think of at the moment is Warne,” Fox said after his victory. “He meant a lot to me and this event and was a great mate. It’s a terrible shame he’s not here.”
