Sergio Garcia rewards persistent Twitter follower with a day on the bag

A fan has been bugging Sergio Garcia to caddy for him, and the Spaniard has finally agreed.

There is a lot of talk about Sergio Garcia at the moment on the back of his great three-stroke victory at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic. The Spaniard is now 9th in the overall world golf rankings are arguably playing some of the best golf of his career. Could he overcome the demons of the past and get himself off the list of ‘best players never to win a major’ in 2017?

We’re not so sure just yet, but something we are sure of is this nice bit of social media work from Garcia and this fervent fan.

A bloke by the name of Mark Johnson from the UK has been tweeting Sergio Garcia everyday since July last year hoping to get a chance to carry his bag for a day. As the days went by, Johnson came up with more and more interesting ways to try and get Garcia’s attention.

Then finally, Garcia relented and agreed that Johnson can carry his bag during the Pro-Am before the British Masters in September.

Before the Dubai Desert Classic, Garcia said he saw Johnson’s very first tweet and after many tweets, he agreed with his fiancé they would wait until 200 days before letting him know of the caddy offer.

“I noticed him the first time from the first tweet he posted at me,” Garcia said. “I thought it was quite funny and it was very sincere, and obviously I was wondering how long it was going to keep going.

“Angela [Garcia’s fiancée] and I, we kind of talked about it, and I said, ‘Well, how long should we make him wait?’ And we decided that probably 200 days, if he held it for 200 days, it would probably make the cut.”
