Rory McIlroy Linked to Possible Return at 2025 Australian Open

Newly crowned Masters champion Rory McIlroy is rumoured to be confirming his appearance at the 2025 Australian Open.

Speculation is mounting that Masters champion Rory McIlroy may return to the Australian Open for the first time since 2014.

While no date or venue has been officially confirmed for the 2025 edition, former professional golfer and commentator Mark Allen stated on the Talk Birdie To Me podcast that, based on strong sources, McIlroy is “keen” to make a comeback at the historic tournament.

“As we speak here right now, it’s going to happen,” Allen said. “But we all know in the sporting world that things can change.”

McIlroy, who won the Australian Open in 2013 when he reeled in Adam Scott at Royal Sydney Golf Club, has consistently spoken of his admiration for the event. In past interviews, he has expressed a desire to see the Australian Open restored to its former stature, citing its history and global appeal.

The Northern Irishman has recently taken steps to reduce his PGA Tour commitments, which may create room in his schedule for a return to Australia.

Reports suggest that the 2025 tournament could be held at Royal Melbourne’s composite course, although Golf Australia has yet to confirm this.

The organisation said it is “continuing to work through the future” of both the men’s and women’s Australian Opens, with an announcement expected in the coming weeks.

The men’s event is expected to return to a stand-alone format after a period of dual-gender competition, a move welcomed by top Australian players including Cameron Smith, who believes it will help attract higher-profile fields.

McIlroy’s potential appearance would mark a significant boost for the event as it seeks to reclaim its position on the global golf calendar.

And as Allen suggested, if you get McIlroy to confirm his appearance at one of the world’s greatest golf courses, perhaps the sponsors, prizemoney and prestige will follow.
