Rory McIlroy grabs $15million after winning season ending TOUR Championship

Rory McIlroy claimed earlier in the week that it wasn’t about the money at the TOUR Championship. But he’s been given $15million for winning all the same.

Rory McIlroy didn’t win a major in 2019 with his missed cut at The Open at Royal Portrush a particular disappointment. And because of this, many golf fans may tend to think his year has been a disappointing one.

But McIlroy has had one of his best seasons in terms of results and the Northern Irishman has gone and topped off the season with a four-stroke victory at the TOUR Championship.

McIlroy started the tournament five strokes behind Justin Thomas is a strange format that saw all 30-players ranked according to their FedEx Cup standings.

With Thomas beginning at 10-under par, McIlroy was going to find it difficult to rein him in. Not to mention other big names also a few strokes in front of him including world number one Brooks Koepka.

But McIlroy’s golf at Eastlake Golf Club in Atlanta was so good he would’ve won without the staggered start.

Victory at the TOUR Championship was his third for the year including a win at The PLAYERS Championship and 14 top-10 finishes from 19 starts.

“Three wins, another FedEx Cup, a Players Championship, which I’ve never won before, this season is right up there with one of the best I’ve played,” McIlroy said.

“People will maybe look and say I haven’t won any majors this year, but I feel like I’ve played some of the best golf of my career so I will rate this 2019 season very highly.”
