Ponting shoots 3-under from the tips at Thirteenth Beach

Ponting beats Popovic in Victorian Open pro-am – then caddies for him.

Former Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting carded an impressive 3-under par in Victorian Open pro-am at the Thirteenth Beach Golf Club.

Remarkably, Ponting not only outgunned many of the professionals but also managed to beat playing partner and former Australian PGA Championship winner Daniel Popovic who he is carrying the bag for during today’s opening round of the Oates Victorian Open.

Popovic took to Twitter to suggest giving Ponting a spot on the field:

Even during his cricket playing days, Ponting was always considered to be a great golfer – prompting Gary Player to once question whether he had concentrated on the wrong sport.

Ponting now plays of a handicap of +1 and will reappear on the golf course as a competitor at next week’s New Zealand Open which is played in a pro-am format across the four days. Ponting will be paired with Popovic for the event who have become good friends over the past year.

With this sort of form on the golf course, those rumours of Ponting one day turning professional aren’t going to go away quickly.
