Ogilvy qualifies for 2011 Presidents Cup

Geoff Ogilvy has pulled off a great escape act by finishing third in the BMW championship and assuring himself automatic qualification for the Internationals Presidents Cup team in Melbourne.

Justin Rose won the BMW Championship this morning but from an Australian point of view, two Aussies played some wonderful golf to set themselves up for a Presidents Cup berth and a guaranteed spot in some of 2012’s biggest golf tournaments.

John Senden needed a win to be a chance of getting into the Presidents Cup but his second place finish sees him in next week’s 30-man Fed Ex Cup playoff and a chance for the $10million first prize. He also secured a spot in the 2012 US Masters, British Open and US Open by making the final field for next week.

Senden could still find himself at Royal Melbourne for the Presidents Cup if Greg Norman selects him in the two captain’s picks to be announced next week. Despite his good form, one would expect perhaps Robert Allenby and Aaron Baddeley to be selected by Norman. A FedEx Cup win by Senden (ranked 9th next week) may make those selections more difficult!

Geoff Ogilvy owns a house that backs onto Royal Melbourne golf course and he would have been devastated to miss out on a berth in the team.

Standing on the 17th tee in the final round of last week’s FedEx Cup playoff event, Ogilvy looked destined to drop out of the playoffs and automatic Presidents Cup selection. A penalty drop and two clutch putts saw him qualify for this week’s tournament.

Ogilvy played superb golf all week and finished in a tie for third spot. He has now not just gained a berth in the Presidents Cup team but a spot in next week’s 30-man field to decide the FedEx Cup winner.
