Matt Griffin and Minjee Lee walked away with the winner’s trophies at the Oates Victorian Open at Thirteenth Beach Golf Club in what is one of world’s most unique golf tournaments.

Since 2012, the Victorian Open has simultaneously conducted the men’s and women’s tournament with the alternate pairings forming the final round groups.

Matt Griffin prevailed after a thrilling three-hole sudden death playoff against Matt Steiger. Griffin and Steiger tied at 7-under par for the tournament at superb Thirteenth Beach (Beach Course) layout with overnight leader Brett Drewitt finishing a shot back on 6-under par.

The current Australian amateur champion Minjee Lee showed she is clearly a superstar of the game emphatically winning the Women’s Victorian Open by six shots on a final score of 16-under par. Scotland’s Vicki Laing was second at 10-under par while first round leader Sarah-Jane Smith was a shot back at 9-under par.

Lee’s final round 6-under par 68 begun with a nervous start with two bogeys in her opening three holes but the 17-year-old amateur settled to claim her first professional tournament victory.

“It feels unbelievable, it hasn’t really sunk in yet, I’m pretty happy and just stoke that I have won,” Lee said following the final round.

“I saw the leaderboard after 15, and I was like, I just have to finish nicely and I’ll be OK.”
