Lydia Ko shoots record equalling 29th consecutive round under par: video

World number one golfer Lydia Ko has just carded her 29th consecutive round under par on the LPGA Tour.

Lydia Ko has shot her 29th consecutive under par round thanks to a 1-under par 71 in the first round of the ANA Inspiration event at Rancho Mirage in California.

The ANA Inspiration was formally known as the Kraft Nabisco Championship and is the first major of the LPGA calendar year.

American Morgan Pressell leads the tournament by one shot after an opening round 67 has her just ahead of Japan’s Ai Miyazato.

Ko equalled Annika Sorenstam’s 2004 LPGA record of 29 rounds of golf under par by the barest of margins and looked in danger of going over par late in her round. An incredible escape through trees on her 16th hole followed by birdie at the next has her just four shots off the lead.

Here is Ko talking about the great escape shot she played through trees on her 16th hole today.

The Australians in the field haven’t got off to a great start. Two-time winner of this tournament Karrie Webb is the best placed Aussie in the field at 2-over par, with Katherine Kirk and Minjee Lee shooting 4-over par rounds of 76. Sarah Jane-Smith is a shot further back at 5-over par.
