Lucas Herbert claims maiden PGA Tour win in Bermuda
In brutal conditions, Lucas Herbert has claimed his first PGA Tour victory in Bermuda, sewing up a spot in The Masters in the process.
Lucas Herbert has claimed his maiden PGA Tour victory at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. Herbert’s one-stroke victory over Patrick Reed and Danny Lee came in brutal conditions which saw players bashed by strong winds and rain for most of the weekend.
“Just so hard out there today and I just, it was one of those ones you couldn’t even let yourself kind of get ahead and think that you’ve won the tournament early because conditions were just so brutal that you could have hit a shot anywhere at any time offline,” Herbert said.
“It was just good to survive I guess is probably the way to describe it.”
Herbert’s victory in just his 20th start on the PGA Tour means the Australian earns himself a spot in the field at The Masters next April, rises into the world’s top-50 players and can be assured of many more spots in upcoming events on the tour.
“The next 12 months are going to be really cool. I’ve never played Augusta, so being able to play the Masters is going to be pretty cool,” Herbert said after being told of his spot in The Masters.
Getting to play in — we just talked about Kapalua, getting to play in a few of these events that I’ve watched growing up on TV, it’s just going to be a cool experience. No matter how I play, it’s just going to be phenomenal to play in those tournaments. It’s going to be lots of fun.”
Entering the final round four shots behind the leader, Herbert’s 2-under par closing round was solid in the difficult conditions.
Clawing his way into the lead, Herbert arrived at the closing hole with a one-stroke lead at 15-under par. A fast-finishing Patrick Reed was already in the clubhouse at 14-under par and playing partner Danny Lee was also just a shot behind.
Herbert’s clutch pitch shot to a metre put the pressure on Lee who missed his birdie putt, handing the Aussie a career-defining victory.
