LPGA / Lydia Ko beats Minjee Lee with sensational eagle in playoff

Lydia Ko emerged as the winner after a dramatic finish at the LPGA’s MEDIHEAL Championship at Lake Merced Golf Club in San Francisco.

There were some great golf shots played down the stretch at the LPGA’s MEDIHEAL Championship in San Francisco this morning, but none greater than the 3-wood to the 18th hole from Lydia Ko.

After Australia’s Minjee Lee made birdie at the final hole to get to 12-under par for the tournament, Ko did the same thing after almost holing her chip shot for eagle to force a sudden-death playoff to decide the winner.

Heading back down the 18th hole, both players found the middle of the fairway with their drives but it was Ko’s second shot that decided the tournament. The former world number one struck a superb 3-wood that finished three feet from the hole.

The eagle saw Ko claim her first tournament win since July 2016 and ends a long drought that had many wondering if she could ever regain the dominant form of 2014 – 2016. Prior to this event, Ko had slipped to number 17 on the Rolex World Golf Rankings.

While it was a disappointing finish for Lee. she did everything she could to win the golf tournament including a magnificent hole-out bunker shot on the 17th hole.

It was Lee’s fifth top-10 finish on the LPGA Tour in 2018.
