Robert Karlsson wins 2008 Dunhill Links Championship

Aussie Golfer happened to be in Scotland last weekend when a tournament was on at St.Andrews.

I made my way from Edinburgh on to the Old Course to see Robert Karlsson continue his magic form and take out the Dunhill Links Championship on the first sudden death playoff hole.

“What’s that got to do with Australian Golf?” a few of you may be saying.

Well maybe nothing. Marcus Fraser had a good week on course but there is one thing that sets this tournament apart from all others.

Aside from the fact the tournament is played at three different courses during the week, celebrities, high profile businessmen and sponsors play all four days paired with a professional. Hugh Grant, Ronan Keating and Samuel L. Jackson are some of those that take part most years.

Amateurs often play with professionals on the day before a tournament at Australian events but I’m not sure anything like this has been done before. All the professionals appear to really like the event and maybe something like this could be held in Australia to raise the profile of the sport and bring some fun back to the game.

Ensuring the amateurs chosen are of high enough profile and are well briefed on not holding the professionals up too much, I think this could work down under.
