Justin Thomas is hot in Hawaii; cards a 59 at Sony Open

Justin Thomas was often referred to as “Jordan Spieth’s best buddy”, now he’s a potential future major winner.

When most golf experts were making their 2017 predictions over the holiday break, most of them were talking about the return of Tiger Woods, the rise of Hideki Matsuyama and the likelihood of Rory McIlroy winning another major. Few people said anything about Justin Thomas.

But now he’s the guy everyone is talking about in the golf world.

Thomas’ victory last week over Matsuyama to open the season at Kapalua was the 23-year-old’s second win in his last four tournaments, and his fifth top-10 finish in six starts.

And now he’s gone and blitzed the field in his opening round of the Sony Open in Hawaii at the par-70 Waialee Country Club by carding an 11-under 59 that included two eagles, eight birdies and a bogey!

Thomas is now ranked number 12 in the world and everyone is talking about him. Gone are the days when Thomas was often referred to as Jordan Spieth’s best mate, now he’s being spoken of as a future major winner. Maybe in 2017.
