People are angry that Jason Day wore a Nike t-shirt to THE PLAYERS trophy presentation

Jason Day caused a stir by wearing a cap and t-shirt to present the PLAYERS trophy on Sunday.

By the time Si Woo Kim rolled in his final putt on the 18th green to become the youngest-ever winner of THE PLAYERS Championship, Jason Day had long since finished his round, a 8-over par 80.

After such a poor round, Day would have been keen to leave TPS Sawgrass as quickly as possible but as defending champion he was still required to hand the trophy to Kim at the presentation ceremony. But when he appeared a lot of people were upset about the clothes he was wearing.

Day had changed into a range of Nike street wear clothing – cap, shoes, skateboarding t-shirt. Some suggested that by donning the informal gear (possibly told by Nike to do so) Day was being a disrespectful to the new South Korean champion and the tournament wearing the informal gear.

Of course there were a few that loved it as well.

I’ve no doubt that Day (and Nike) thought this would create a stir. And while on one hand we love seeing relaxed golf course dress codes we do think the PGA Tour will be having a word or two to Day about this one.

Out favourite response came from Steven Bowditch who has laid claim to the Nike “SB” on Twitter:

  • If there is going to be a fifth major it certainly doesn’t go be in the US. They already have 50% of the majors.

  • Probably not the best choice by him but if there are not stated rules by the PGA TOUR then what is the big deal. After all it is not a major.
