I Finally Got Fitted for New Irons – Here’s How It All Went Down
Golf club fittings aren’t just for pros. Here’s how an hour at Power Golf opened my eyes to the difference the right clubs can make.
After more than a decade with my trusty Nike Vapor Pro irons, I knew the game had changed.
I’ve always loved my old irons but modern irons promise more forgiveness, better distance, and tighter dispersion—and those promises were starting to eat away at me.
So, I finally booked a fitting session at Power Golf in Sydney to see what all the fuss was about.
Booking and First Impressions
The process started with a simple online booking for a fitting session in one of Power Golf’s simulators. When I arrived, I was greeted by the friendly and experienced staff. It has been a while since I’d been to this golf store, but I’d heard Power Golf was under new management, and the changes were immediately obvious.
My club fitter for the day was Peter Stevens, a former touring pro and current teaching professional, but I’m not sure if I was going to make this session easy for him.
Unlike many golfers, I’m never that interested in the latest golf club technology until I’m back in the market for them. I didn’t walk in with a brand preference. I wasn’t chasing the latest release or a specific brand name—I just wanted the right clubs for my game, something that might make the game easier and more fun.

Warming Up and Baseline Numbers
We started with a few warm-up shots using a wedge before moving on to the key part of any fitting: hitting my own 7-iron. This is standard practice because it’s a good middle ground between short and long irons. If you’re planning a fitting, bring your current 7-iron for comparison.
My numbers?
- Carry Distance: ~138 metres
- Spin Rate: ~8,000 rpm (which Peter politely called “a little high”)
Then came the fun part—Peter handed me a new 7-iron to try. The next five shots carried 160 metres, and my spin dropped to around 6,000 rpm. Yes, modern lofts are slightly stronger (this one was 1° stronger than my old club), but the improvement was undeniable.

The Real Magic—Adjustments and Shafts
Pete seamlessly swapped out heads, adjusted lie angles, and tested different shafts. This is where the fitting really opened my eyes. The ideal shaft for me turned out to be 15 grams heavier than what I’d been using for years. I thought my old shafts were perfect—but that was a decade ago. Your swing changes over time, and so should your equipment.
The goal wasn’t just distance. Peter focused on landing angle, dispersion (how tightly your shots group), and overall consistency. After all, distance is great, but control is what helps the scorecard.

No Pressure, Just Good Data
One thing I really appreciated: at no point did I feel pressured to buy new clubs. I was having a ball just looking at the numbers and learning about my swing.
Honestly, I wasn’t even sure I’d purchase new irons that day.
But the combination of the data—and more importantly, the feel of the new clubs—was compelling. In the end, it was a no-brainer.
The Takeaways
- Technology matters—modern irons really do offer more forgiveness and better performance.
- Your swing changes—age, body, and technique evolve, so your clubs should too.
- Data is your friend—don’t get lost in the numbers, but pay attention to the key ones: carry, spin, dispersion, and landing angle.
An hour later, I’d found my new set of irons. The experience was seamless, the staff were fantastic, and the results spoke for themselves.
If you’re on the fence about a fitting, my advice is simple: book one. It might just change your game.

This was very well laid out and easy to follow.
