Greg Chalmers wins Australian PGA after epic seven-hole playoff

Greg Chalmers outlasted Adam Scott and Wade Ormsby in an incredible seven hole playoff to win the 2014 Australian PGA Championship.

Greg Chalmers has won his second Australian PGA Championship after surviving an epic 7-hole sudden-death playoff against Adam Scott and Wade Ormsby.

The seven hole finale was the longest playoff to decide a winner in Australasian professional golf that only ended after an unexpected mistake from the world #3 Adam Scott.

Chalmers only once hit the fairway over the course of the seven hole finale but somehow managed to scramble his way to the green and keep himself in with a chance.

In stark contrast, Scott was robotic off the tee and sent most of his drives long and straight setting up wedge after wedge shot. It was here that Scott struggled.

On four occasions, Scott left his sand wedge well short of the hole. And with his putter running cold, the former Masters champion sent putt after putt skirting past the hole.

You got the sense that if Chalmers could just get the ball within 20 feet of the hole, he would win. But it was a three-putt on the seventh playoff hole that brought an abrupt, disappointing end to the tournament.

After leaving yet another simple wedge shot short of the hole on the seventh playoff hole, Scott appeared frustrated and struck his putt too hard. The tricky five footer coming back never looked like going in and Chalmers tapped in for victory.

Earlier, Wade Ormsby looked to be in the box seat to secure an upset victory on the second playoff hole. After producing a stunning approach shot to within six feet from the fairway bunker, Ormsby missed his putt that would have secured the win.

Chalmers victory was well-deserved after firing a bogey-free 8-under par final round to propel him into a playoff with Adam Scott and Wade Ormsby.

The win also gives Chalmers a few starts in the WGC events next year, something he badly needed after losing his full paying rights on the US PGA tour.
