A Swing Through History

The origins of the Golden Tee series trace back to the creative minds at Incredible Technologies, who initially conceived the idea of a large-scale golf simulator for family entertainment centres. While the full-scale simulator concept was set aside, programmer Larry Hodgson’s groundwork in creating virtual golf courses remained.

Teaming up with co-designer Jim Zielinski, the concept evolved into a more accessible arcade game. The defining feature of the series, the trackball control system, was adopted, and the first iteration was unveiled in 1989. This initial version garnered attention by offering a conversion kit, allowing existing arcade cabinets to transform into Golden Tee setups.

The breakthrough for the series arrived with Golden Tee 3D Golf in 1995, ushering in the era of networked online play. Cabinets were linked to a central computer, enabling players to compete in tournaments regardless of their physical location.

This innovation not only enhanced the gaming experience but also fostered a vibrant competitive community. The series quickly expanded, with numerous releases and editions, each building upon the foundation of its predecessors.
