The HSBC Champions event is the final WGC tournament of the year. Each tournament features has a small field featuring the world’s best players who have qualified through the many golf tours around the world. The WGC events were established to bring all the world’s golf tours together, a world golf tour of sorts. Unfortunately, the HSBC Champions tournament is the only one of the four being held outside of the USA.
A great field of 78 players are starting this week and seven Aussies are in the field.

If you win on a WGC, PGA Tour or European Tour over the last year, you get a spot in the field, so Adam Scott and Aaron Baddeley are playing. The top five players from the FedExCup points list, not already exempt get a spot, so John Senden will be there too.
There are a few aussies in the field you may not expect too.
Stuart Appleby and Peter Senior are playing as they won last year’s 2010 JBWere Australian Masters and Australian PGA Championships respectively. Geoff Ogilvy gets a spot courtesy of his 2010 Australian Open win; Alistair Presnell and Adam Bland have spots by finishing high in the 2010 Australasian Tour Order of Merit. David Gleeson also gets to play the biggest tournament of his career thanks to his Asian Tour Order of Merit ranking.
Often the Australasian Tour isn’t given the credit it deserves and these inclusions give you a good indication how just how important the tour can be.
