Egos and in-fighting tore apart Team USA at Ryder Cup

While the Europeans were watching motivational videos, winning back the Ryder Cup and ending up in bed together, it’s now being reported that the US team were tearing themselves apart.

After the final putt dropped for a 17/5 – 10.5 dominant European victory, rumours began to swirl about the arguments and simmering feuds within the US Ryder Cup team.

Patrick Reed’s wife was the first to add some support to the issues by suggesting that Reed had issues with his previously successful partnership with Jordan Spieth being broken up in favour of Speith playing with his good friend Justin Thomas.

The Reed and Spieth combination has a 5-1-2 record at the 2014 and 2016 Ryder Cup’s but were split up this time. Reed went 1-2 for the week losing both his fourball matches playing with Tiger Woods but winning his singles match 3&2 over Tyrell Hatton. Spieth and Thomas won three of their four matches.

Reed then broke ranks suggesting he should not have been benched for two afternoons in an interview with Karen Crouse at the New York Times:

Instead, Reed was benched in the afternoon, as was Woods. The next morning, Reed again played again with Woods, and again they lost to Molinari and Fleetwood as Reed dumped multiple balls in the water hazards. Reed didn’t play the second afternoon session.

“For somebody as successful in the Ryder Cup as I am, I don’t think it’s smart to sit me twice,” Reed said.

ESPN have now quoted a member of Team USA as saying “He [Reed] is so full of s***” regarding the feud supposedly begged to play with Woods.

The Ryder Cup should really just use the Presidents Cup format where everybody plays every session and we wouldn’t have this problem in the first place.

And then there is this simmering feud between good “friends” Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson.

Joel Beall at golf Digest is reporting that Keopka and Johnson had an altercation on the plane on the way over to the Ryder Cup and then had to be separated at a Ryder Cup party on Sunday night. The central figure being Johnson’s wife Paulina Gretzky.

Specifically what happened to cause Johnson and Koepka to be separated is unclear. A source told Golf Digest that Paulina Gretzky, Johnson’s fiancee, was a central figure in the incident. Koepka’s girlfriend, Jena Sims, was also involved.

If all this is true they really had very little chance of winning and the scoreline is not much of a surprise at all.
