Denmark defeat Australia in the final of inaugural GolfSixes

The European Tour tried out a new style of golf tournament over the weekend with Denmark defeating Australia in the final.

Two days of six-hole match play golf featuring teams of two golfers from 16 countries included walk-on songs, pyrotechnics and shot clocks meant GolfSixes was always going to be a unique golf tournament.

And nearly everyone deemed it a success after Denmark pipped Australia 3-1 in the final at the Centurion Golf Club at St.Albans, just north of London.

Inspired by the World Super 6 Perth played at Lake Karrinyup earlier this year the GolfSixes was played over just six holes and in a greensomes format which saw both golfers teeing off and alternate shot played after choosing the best drive.

With plenty of support The Australian team of Scott Hend and Sam Brazel took the lead on the third hole a but gave it back after making bogey at the fourth hole. The Danish team of Thirbjorn Olesen and Lucas Bjerregaard put their foot down to finish with two birdies and claim victory.

The first coming after a majestic tee shot at the par-3 5th…

And the second after a huge break at the last after Olesen’s golf ball somehow stopped short of going into the water hazard.

Denmark are the undisputed champions of team golf after Thorbjorn Olesen also winning the World Cup of Golf last year in Melbourne with Soren Kjeldsen by his side.
