Danny Willett apologises for his brother’s rant on US golf fans

Danny Willett’s brother had everyone laughing during the Masters, but he now has a few golf fans upset after his rant aimed at US golf fans.

Danny Willett won the Masters Tournament in April this year, but while he was doing so, his brother Pete rose to fame via his hilarious, often cheeky tweets. Pete Willett has created a stir this week in the lead up to The Ryder Cup after his rant in National Club Golfer got some publicity.

Pete Willett doesn’t hold back. After categorising golfers into six types, Willett swings away at the US golf fans, calling them a “mob of imbeciles” and “pudgy, basement-dwelling, irritants, stuffed on cookie dough and pissy beer, pausing between mouthfuls of hotdog so they can scream ‘Baba booey’ until their jelly faces turn red.”

And there was more:

They need to smash the obnoxious dads, with their shiny teeth, Lego man hair, medicated ex-wives, and resentful children. Squeezed into their cargo shorts and boating shoes, they’ll bellow ‘get in the hole’ whilst high-fiving all the other members of the Dentists’ Big Game Hunt Society.

It’s a crazy read and one clearly written with tongue-in-cheek, but it hasn’t gone down too well with captain Darren Clarke and Danny Willett apologising.

“I just was made aware of the article about an hour ago. I haven’t seen it. As soon as I did, I went out to find Danny, who was playing in the last group out there this morning,” Clarke said. “I spoke to Danny about it. I showed it to Danny. And he’s bitterly disappointed in his brother’s article. It is not what Danny thinks. It is not what I think. It is not what Team Europe stands for.”\

Danny Willett apologised soon afterwards to Davis Love that was reported on the Golf Channel.

“I’d just like to apologise obviously to everyone involved for what’s been said. It’s obviously not the thoughts of myself and of the team and of captain Darren. I spoke to him on the phone after I was made aware of what was said and what has been going on,” Danny Willett said.

“And I said to Pete that I was obviously disappointed in what was said and what was written about the American fans that obviously took me under their wing fantastically back in April.”

Along with the Davis Love’s comments that the US Team may be the best Ryder Cup team ever assembled, and Johnny Miller suggesting it’s the worst European team in some time, this is going to be one crazy Ryder Cup.
