This is how Bobby Jones and Alister MacKenzie wanted Augusta National Golf Course to look.
The Masters website are sharing some wonderful old photographs of Augusta National as it was in 1934.
The course was designed by Bobby Jones and Alister MacKenzie and was opened for play in 1933, so these photographs give you an idea of how these two legends of golf intended the golf course to look- much more open and with several thousand less azaleas.
The famous par-3 12th hole for example (above and below) still retains the long, lateral green and the front bunker but things have been tidied up a little. Rae’s Creek has been tamed and narrowed, a few more azaleas surround the green and Hogan Bridge replaced the old wooden one in 1958.
