Cameron Smith to play Australian Open and Australian PGA Championship
Open champion Cameron Smith has committed to playing the two major Australian golf tournaments this summer, the Australian Open and the Australian PGA Championship.
Cameron Smith will join Marc Leishman and Lucas Herbert, who have also confirmed to play the Australian Open at Victoria and Kingston Heath Golf Clubs.
Smith’s Open victory at St.Andrews saw him become the first Australian to win The Open in 29 years. His appearance at the Australian Open is a boon for the national golf championship, which hasn’t been played since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I’ve had an unbelievable year and to be coming home to play tournaments is the icing on the cake,” Smith said. “I’m so excited to see friends and family again. Some of them I haven’t seen for years now and once I get to the golf course, I’ve got my eye on some more trophies.
“It will be my first time playing in Melbourne since the 2019 Presidents Cup which was one of the best experiences I’ve had in golf. The crowds were incredible that week and I’m looking forward to a similar atmosphere at Victoria and Kingston Heath.”
Golf Australia and the WPGA announced today that Women’s Open champion Ashleigh Buhai would also be making her way to Australia for the national championship – the first big-name international golfer to do so.
The ISPS HANDA Australian Open will be played at Victoria and Kingston Heath Golf Clubs from December 1-4, and the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship will be played at Royal Queensland Golf Club in Brisbane from November 24-27.
