Australian summer of tournament golf gets underway at Moonah Links

After a sporadic couple of years, a solid summer of tournament golf in Australia has relaunched today with the start of the Victorian PGA Championship at Moonah Links.

Despite the cancellation of the Australian, the PGA of Australia have put together a jam-packed schedule that includes the blossoming Players’ Series, the Australian PGA Championship, and the inaugural Australian WPGA Championship.

And when you throw in Geoff Ogilvy’s innovative Sandbelt Invitational as well, you’ve got a stack of great golf to get along to watch this summer.

A number of the events will be broadcast on FoxSports/Kayo.

This week’s Victorian PGA Championship tees off on Thursday, December 9 and includes a number of celebrity golfers in the field vying for the Victorian Celebrity Amateur Challenge.

The PGA of Australia explains:

In a format reminiscent of the Pebble Beach Pro-am and Dunhill Links Championship, our tour stars are playing alongside amateurs and they will compete for the Victorian Celebrity Amateur Challenge.

Among the professionals, one group to watch out for this morning is Australian Open champion Peter Lonard playing alongside Deyen Lawson – who played in this year’s The Open Championship at Royal St George’s.

AFL football fans can look out for the likes of Brendan Fevola, Paul Roos and Dale Thomas, while other celebrities in the field include champion jockeys Damien Oliver and Glen Boss, Australian Golf Show co-host Tiffany Cherry and The Block star Keith Schleiger.

Aside from the now unfortunate lack of tournament golf in South Australia, all credit to everyone for getting so many tournaments up and running.

Get along and support Australian professional golf this summer when it arrives near you.
