Australian Masters: Day 1 and 2 wrap

Some observations at the halfway point of the 2008 Australian Masters

  • Robert Allenby remembers halfway through his second round how to putt. Nice article on the Foxsports website. Here’s a taste of it:

The shame is that Allenby hadn’t remembered how to putt six months – or six years – ago.

  • Long John is long gone.Maybe he’ll pull it together for the Australian PGA next week at Coolum. It’s probably better suited to him. There’s talk of him playing the Australian Open.
  • Tim Clark has done what he always does on tough courses, played very well and leads the tournament with Michael Sim.
  • NSW Open champ, Aaron Townsend has continued his fine form with a course record equalling 64 to shoot him up into the Top 10. After playing his final 5 holes of his first round this morning in 4-over par, that’s not a bad effort!
  • Danny Lee is going to be great.
  • The bunkers at Huntingdale have caused the most controversy and are not the great bunkers we know from the Melbourne sandbelt courses.
  • Finally some great form has come from Michael Sim. At one point considered to be a future star of Australian golf, his last couple of years have been, well OK. He missed out at Q-school last week but at 24 has plenty of time to make it. With a fantastic 65 today and now tied for the lead, maybe it will be his weekend?
