Australian golf experts give us their US Open picks

It’s all very well for us hackers to make a few predictions, but who do the experts think will win the 2012 US Open?

We asked Australia’s golf experts to give us their predictions on who will win and Australia’s best golfer at this week’s brutal US Open at The Olympic Club. A full range of winner’s are picked below but Aaron Baddeley appears the overwhelming choice to be the best Aussie this week.

Here are the picks starting with Mark Hayes from The Herald-Sun:

Mark Hayes – Herald Sun
Winner: Jason Dufner – “I’ll stick to my guns that Tiger is a spent force in majors, especially on a course requiring precision off the tee. It’s tough to overlook Jason Dufner, who has two wins and one second place in his past four starts. Olympic’s not a beast, lengthwise, and he learnt plenty about majors after being in the mix at Augusta.”
Best Aussie: John Senden – “Of the Aussies, John Senden has been our most consistent this year and is due a break in a big event. For value hunters at different levels, try the in-form Justin Rose ($29), Ryder Cup captain Davis Love ($101) and if streaky Englishman Robert Rock ($301) rolls, he’s not without hope.”
Check out the great yarn Mark Hayes had with Australian golfer Alistair Presnell in today’s Herald-Sun. This week’s US Open will be the first time Presnell’ has ever teed it up in a major golf tournament.
Luke Elvy – Channel 10
Winner: Justin Rose
Best Aussie: Aaron Baddeley
Martin Blake – The Age
Winner: Louis Oosthuizen
Best Aussie: Adam Scott
Brendan James – Golf Australia magazine
Winner: Tiger Woods – “Deserves to be favourite or near it. Will be able to compete without using driver too much. 5 wood might get a workout. Got a real sense at Memorial he is no longer fighting his swing changes and, as a result, he’s been able put more work into his chipping and putting which appears back to its best.”
Best Aussie: Adam Scott – “Form ball-striker among the Aussies and his high ball flight will allow him to be more aggressive with approach shots than some others. He just needs to keep it tidy through 63 holes, keep the doubles off his card and he can win his first major.”
“That said I will be trying to put a small wager on Anthony Summers to make the cut. Has a game well suited to Olympic. At 1000-1 to win surely the odds of him to make the cut will still be juicy. Great Cinderella story.”
Rod Morri – TalkinGolf and Golf Australia magazine contributor
Winner: Lee Westwood
Best Aussie: Aaron Baddeley
Richard Hinds – Sydney Morning Herald
Winner: Luke Donald
Best Aussie: Geoff Ogilvy

Andy Maher – Channel 10/FoxSports/SEN Radio

Winner: Lee Westwood
Best Aussie: Jason Day

Ben Everill – Australian AP Golf Writer
Winner: Lee Westwood
Best Aussie: “Don’t like to single out our boys over each other but… Aaron Baddeley.”
Mark Allen – SEN Radio
Winner: Ian Poulter – “Hits fairways and greens. Smart player playing solid golf.”
Best Aussie: Aaron Baddeley

Richard Fellner – Inside Golf Magazine
Winner: Jason Dufner – “This course is all about accuracy. The big hitters may not get rewarded for length, apart from a few holes.”
Best Aussie: John Senden

and for what it’s worth…
Michael Green – Aussie Golfer
Winner: Dustin Johnson
Best Aussie: Aaron Baddeley

  • I’m a little surprised nobody is picking Rory, but on current form it is fair. Rory seems to be gaining baggage, hitting the ball into the lake on the final hole last weekend was one more bag to carry. herb

  • Need to be able to shape the ball both ways at Olympic, Rory is yet to convince me that he has a consistent fade.

  • I like the chances of Lee Westwood and Peter Hanson. I think Adam Scott & John Senden are the best chances amongst the Aussies.
