Adam Scott will become the world’s number one ranked golfer on Monday, becoming only the second Australian to ever top the rankings.
Greg Norman held the number one position in the rankings for a total of 331 weeks between 1986 and 1997. Scott is not playing this week but will take over from Tiger Woods on Monday without hitting a shot.
The injured Tiger Woods had not played a tournament for more than six-weeks and will relinquish the number one spot to Scott courtesy of a quirk in the rankings system which is based on a 2-year rolling cycle.
Scott will be come the 17th golfer to climb to the top of the world golf rankings since the introduction of the official rankings in 1986.
I wouldn’t call the two year rolling cycle a “quirk”. If it was just based on total cumulative points then Woods may continue to be world number one after he retires, which doesn’t make any sense at all.
