ACCIDENT? Rory McIlroy snapped his driver during the BMW Championship
Rory McIlroy experienced yet another equipment mishap during the final round of the BMW Championship in Denver, Colorado, when his driver snapped while picking up his tee.
The incident occurred on the ninth hole at Castle Pines Golf Club, where McIlroy hit a wayward tee shot near the edge of a stream. As the Northern Irishman bent down to collect his tee, he leaned on his driver, which gave way under his weight and broke in half.
This marked the second day McIlroy had encountered equipment issues, having thrown a club into the water in frustration during Friday’s round.
Despite the mishap, McIlroy’s performance around the ninth hole drew attention for more than just the broken club. His ball had landed precariously close to a creek, forcing him to remove his shoes and socks to play his second shot while standing in the water. Remarkably, McIlroy’s recovery shot was superb getting a look at birdie but ultimately settling for par.
McIlroy’s struggles at the BMW Championship came after a challenging start to the FedEx Cup Playoffs, where he finished near the bottom of the leaderboard at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
