2016 Masters: 5 dark horses who could win this week

Here are a few other golfers who may just upset the favourites and win the Masters this week.

We’re all familiar with some of the favourites to win this week at what must surely rank as one of the most wide-open Masters fields in recent history: Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy, Jason Day, Bubba Watson and Adam Scott. But what about the other guys in the field? Is anyone else a chance to win?

Despite the being the smallest field of any of the majors, The Masters has plenty of names who are playing great golf who aren’t dominating the discussion.

We’ve already looked at the five Aussies in the 2016 Masters field, but don’t be surprised if you see these five in with a chance to win the green jacket this week.

Henrik Stenson
It says something about how open the 2016 Masters is when you see Henrik Stenson around 10th or 11th favourite. Since last year’s US Open, Stenson has 12 top-10 finishes in his last 17 starts including four in six starts this year. Stenson is knocking on the door of victory and while some may question whether he can get the job done in a major, it would be foolish to forget about him this week.

Justin Rose
Of course all the golfers listed here will have good recent results and Justin Rose is no different but it’s the Englishman’s record at The Masters that makes him always a threat to win a green jacket. Rose finished in a tie for second place behind Spieth last year and followed it up with two more top-10 finishes at the Open Championship and the PGA Championship.

Paul Casey
It wasn’t long ago where you could have been forgiven for thinking Paul Casey’s career was on the slide but the Englishman has resurrected his game, rising to number 25 in the world. Two Top-10’s in his last two stroke play events coupled with a superb performance at Augusta in 2015, Casey will arrive at Augusta confident of another great showing.

Patrick Reed
Patrick Reed has been playing some great golf without much fuss and we can see the American being about the place on Sunday. Reed has only played in two previous Masters – a missed cut and then a tie for 22nd last year. Reed is building some confidence both at Augusta and his golf game.

Louis Oosthuizen
The 2010 Open Champion is somehow listed as high as 33/1 to win this week. Remarkable given Oosthuizen’s performance in the big events (he finished second at both the US Open and Open Championship last year) and recent form. A missed cut at the Houston Open last week doesn’t worry us – is mind was elsewhere. Augusta, in fact.
