Could the 2008 Masters be the year of the Australian?

Each and every year for probably close to the last 25 Aussie Golfer has watched with keen interest hoping for an Aussie to win the US Masters. I don’t need to go into the events which have transpired to rob us of an Australian champion but we head on into the great event once again with high hopes.

There are a record 9 Australians in the event this year. They are Nick O’Hern, Robert Allenby, Stuart Appleby, Adam Scott, Aaron Baddeley, Peter Lonard, Geoff Ogilvy. John Senden and Richard Green are making their debuts at Augusta. Out of a field of 89 that gives us a 10.1% chance of an Aussie being a winner! And if you look at some of the field exemptions (Todd Hamilton, Raymond Floyd, Sandy Lyle etc.) I reckon we’ve got to be more like a 15% chance!

Adam Scott’s throat problem is an issue but Ogilvy’s form makes up for that ($3.25 as top Aussie isn’t bad). Although he did make this comment during the week: “Someone (an Australian) is going to have a good week in April one day”, so maybe he’s not quite in the right frame of mind this week, today, tomorrow, ah I dunno.

I suppose there is that one bloke who may get in the way of an Aussie victory. Apparently, you can choose someone else from the field winning for $1.70. That’s how good he is.
