This summer’s richest golf tournament starts in Adelaide this week

Australia’s richest golf tournament this summer tees off in Adelaide on Thursday – the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open.

World number one Lydia Ko headlines a strong field at the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open that tees off at The Grange Golf Club on Thursday. The club’s west course will host the richest tournament in Australia this summer (men’s tournaments included) with a total prize purse of US$1.3 million.

And not surprisingly, it comes a quality field. The tri-sanctioned event between the LPGA, LET and ALPG tours will feature the likes of Karrie Webb, Cheyenne Woods, Minjee Lee, Jiyai Shin, Charley Hull and world number nine Ha Na Jang who won last week’s LPGA event in Florida.

The event marks the return of big tournament golf to Adelaide, a city that despite its own ‘red’ sandbelt region of stunning golf courses has been largely forgotten by professional golf. This week’s tournament is the first time in 22 years the Women’s Australian Open is held in Adelaide since Annika Sorenstam romped to victory at Royal Adelaide in 1994.

Royal Adelaide will again host the tournament in 2017 as part of its 125th birthday celebrations before it moves to Kooyonga Golf Club in 2018.

All four rounds of the ISPS Handa Australian Open will be broadcast live on ABC TV. Tickets available from www.Ticketek.com.au.
